Greetings! My name is Dana, my boys-Scott (age 12) is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish. Matthew (age 10) is allergic to peanuts & tree nuts. Food allergies have changed our lives in every way. My husband, Duane is in the Air Force, and is approaching 20 years in service! We have moved 10 times in our marriage of 18 years! Our boys' lifestyle includes attending different schools. Going to school is still my #1 concern! My boys have been educated well about food allergies. It's important to them to teach others as well. In the past, my older son has gone class to class educating other students and just this past year(at Del Webb MS)spoke to the entire school over the intercom about food allergies and how to help others. They wear their epi-pens on a belt everywhere they go, reading ingredients & labels themselves, and proactively alerting substitute teachers & others of their serious allergies. This is one proud momma! What's our secret? Start educating while they are young.

Hi! My name is Erin. My daughter, Grace will be 2 in September. We just confirmed yesterday with Dr. McKnight that she has a peanut/peanut butter allergy. I've taken a quick look at the site, and hope to make the next meeting in August. I keep getting sad about the foods Grace won't be able to enjoy (M&Ms, Reeses PBCs - can you tell I love my chocolate?) but am trying to change my mindset and think about all the alternatives out there for us. I will make a trip to Whole Foods for some Sunbutter this weekend and will see if she likes it! Anyway, I hope to meet some of you soon! Erin

Hi, My name is imelda, I have two daughters with different kind, of allergies, Ria is going to be 6 in August, is allergic to peanuts, nuts and fish. Ava is 15 months and is more tougher to take care of, her allergies is to eggs, wheat and dairy, Ria can eat mac and cheese, omelet and some food from macdonalds, while Ava can absolutely not!!! It is quite a challenge feeding time. My worries is when Ava is older and realized she cannot eat what her sister is eating. Anyway, its good to know there are other people with similar worries.

Hi. My son is 11. He is allergic to Peanuts. We have a 504 plan. We have used a peanut free table in the lunch room. My son enjoyed purchasing hot lunches at the elementary school because up until 9/2/2008 the lunches were peanut free. My son has had to deal with kids teasing him. Some teachers have been real helpful.
My son's 504 includes Who has the epi pen. Where the epi pens go. Lunch room adaptations. Peanut free table at lunch.

Hello Everyone: My name is Tiffany. My son Andrew who is 6 years old has sever food allergies. I have known about his food allergies since he was six months, so I have been dealing with this for a long time. Andrew's food allergies are: Soy, Latex, Dairy, Pork, Shellfish, Wheat, Peanut, Seasame, Chocolate, and Yogurt. The Seasame is our newest allergy that we just found out about. Dr. McKnight and I have decided at this point not to test Andrew for his nature allergies. I have had a couple scares with Andrew, but I have never had to use his Epi Pen. Dr. McKnight recommended me to join this group today, so I am excited to get to know you all.

My name is Rosalie and my daughter Katy (who turned 3 in December) has a peanut/pecan allergy. I also have a 3 month old son (Cameron) who is 99% breastfed but has gotten milk based formula without any problems so far (keeping my fingers crossed!). I ate TONS of peanut butter when I was pregnant and nursing w/ Katy since I have NO allergies but with Cameron I've avoided all peanuts and tree nut products. Hopefully he won't suffer the same fate as his sister! I found out about this group from Dr. McKnight today when we had a follow up appointment and allergy testing and it looks like a great resource. My husband and I are looking forward to next weeks meeting and we will be bringing both of our moms.

Hi! I'm Melissa and I have two daughters with multiple food allergies. Emily cannot have wheat, barley, rye, dairy, eggs, nuts. Natalie cannot have dairy, eggs, and nuts. I have spent oodles of time and energy into learning to provide home-baked items and home-cooked meals for them that are nutritious and enjoyable. I have checked out several cookbooks from the library, researched online, and gained ideas from other blogs. But I have not been able to connect much with other people. I am so glad I found this group!
I have a blog that I want to share with others like you, and hope that we all learn from each other how to provide healthy, safe food for our children. I especially work at how to do this without it costing a fortune. :) The blog is for baking/cooking for children who cannot have wheat, eggs, dairy, or nuts.

Note that several of my recipes do use oats. For those who avoid oats, there still are ideas for how to adapt recipes. I look forward to meeting you!

I'm Mary, mother of 3. Madeleine 6, Jacob 3 allergice to peanuts, PB, and treenuts, and Charlotte who is 8 months.
When Jacob was one we went to a raw cafe to try it. We ordered a piece of pie or cheesecake or something and gave Jacob a bite. He instantly started coughing and rubbing his eyes. We didn't think he looked well and he started getting hives around his eyes that were swelling. My mom has had allergies for years so I knew that eyes swelling was a problem. I read the label and there were so many different kinds of exotic ingredients and different nuts that I knew he was probably having an allergic reaction to something in the pie...We left and stopped to get some Benadryl. We gave him some in the car...He complained the whole time. When we got home I gave him more and then he started throwing up. After he threw up, the hives went away and he was better. He acted exhausted, but I knew the reaction was over.
I used to be a nut eater. I used to put them in EVERYTHING. I thought the reaction must have been to something exotic that was in the pie, not nuts because we ate them all the time. I didn't think much more about it.
A year later we bought the trail mix that has the m&m's in it. I gave Jacob a little bowl and after a while Jacob came over to me complaining. His hands had chewed up nuts on them. His eyes were starting to swell and he was getting hives. I quickly washed his hands. He started coughing. Then his eyes rolled back in his head and he went unconscious. I grabbed my purse and told Maddy to get in the car. I kept saying..."stay with me Jacob...stay with me"...his eyes rolling back in his head the whole time and his little body completely limp. I thought about calling an ambulance but I didn't know which would be quicker. As I was buckling his seat belt he suddenly woke and threw up. I held him over the trash can crying and saying..."stay with me baby"...We came back in the house and he threw up and slept the rest of the day. At the time I didn't realize how serious this incident had been. I should have gone to the hospital.
We saw a pediatrician and I told him. He prescribed and epipen and referred us to McKnight. It took two months to get in. They tested Jacob for tree nuts and peanuts and peanut butter. Cashews had the biggest welt and my mom-instinct tells me that's what his severe reactions were to.
We've been living in a nut free home for a year now and now we are onto the next stage with Jacob: PRESCHOOL!

Just adding to my initial introduction from months ago...my twins are 5 now. We recently found out that my daughter is allergic to tree nuts, as well as sesame. So far my son's re-testing results are only showing his levels are going up and up and up for peanuts and tree nuts-----not the direction we are hoping for. :(

Hello, I'm Jaime, a pharmacist and mom to Cooper, my 20 month old son. He is severely allergic to peanuts, and was diagnosed at 14 months after a reaction to his first trial of peanut butter. He attends preschool full-time, which is thankfully peanut-free.
